As the missiles landed off the coast of Japan, the UAE reiterated its support for the island nation in a message to the UN Security Council.
The UAE has condemned the latest launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea, which resulted in the missiles splashing down in the ocean off the coast of Japan.
In his remarks at the UN Security Council meeting on non-proliferation/Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Mohamed Abushahab, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative, restated the UAE's position (DPRK).
The launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, he said, "put the people of Hokkaido, Japan, at grave peril," and he added that "the UAE firmly condemns this fresh provocation by the DPRK."
In less than a year, the DPRK, according to him, has launched more than 70 ballistic missiles, including nine intercontinental ballistic missiles, all in defiance of Security Council resolutions.
In addition to reaffirming that the UAE supports the people of Japan and the Republic of Korea, he described North Korea's actions as "reckless and provocative." He claimed that this behaviour undermines stability and security worldwide and is bad not only to its neighbours but also to the whole world.
"The likelihood that the DPRK would conduct a seventh nuclear test and the region's heightened rhetoric about nuclear weapons continue to worry the UAE greatly. We demand that the DPRK uphold the Non-Proliferation Treaty, observe international law, and follow the Security Council's decisions."
Furthermore, according to Abushahab, the Security Council must stop North Korea from obtaining unlawful nuclear weapons and defend non-proliferation against future violations.
